Summer Workshop5:Discover your ‘Artistic Unique’
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE ART STYLE?
Style is learned, adopted, manipulated, and developed over time. Sometimes on accident, sometimes on purpose, and often times both.
Your unique approach is a combination of a number of things, your voice, techniques, color choices and arrangements, compositions, subject matter, media, surface and more all wrapped up. Your style is what binds each of your pieces together into a unique and cohesive collection. The best part is that it continues to evolve over time. Even when you’ve found it, it starts to change.
A few things to consider as we take on this journey of self-discovery and development of individual unique art styles:
Are you drawn to the same elements and principles of design in your artworks?
Which source of inspirations and themes show up in your art most often?
How do you manipulate and what kind of subject matter are you drawn to?
What do you enjoy creating and the difference of your work from other artists?

Day 1 and 2
Fefe Talavera
Born in 1979 Fefe was brought up as a native half Mexican, half Brazilian in São Paulo. Interested in all kind of “underground" movements, the typical and unique stylistic freedom of the internationally renowned Street Art and Graffiti scene of her hometown made an important impression on the artist.
Her raw creative energy thus found much more correspondence in the angled, tribal-like style she developed while working in the streets, than in her studies in fine arts which she finished with a Bachelor at the FAAP in São Paulo. Showing at galleries and accepting certain rules, limits and intolerance of the art market system represent a contradiction for Fefe who is mainly interested in finding public ways to express herself and a common way of communication.
As other artists from her generation she perceives São Paulo as a contemporary megalopolis shattered by social, economic and ecological problems which had a harmful impact on the urban landscape. The public walls thereby remain one possibility of showing what is beautiful “inside" the strong personalities of the people living there. Street Art and Graffiti in South and Central America can as well be understood in the tradition of political mural art reflecting contemporary urban life (“Murales").
Fefe, who is influenced by Mayan or Aztec mythologies and her Mexican heritage, is most well known for her monsters made of cut out letters from concert announcement posters found all around the streets. The glued collage-like figures are related to the artist's admiration for typography, books and prints, but also to her will to somehow “free" the letters from their fixed meaning as words, sentences or texts, by showing their formal qualities as well as by reminding us that all kind of language is rooted in the direct expression of human affects, not in the function to command them.
Even though the “letter monsters" became very popular because of their originality, Fefe returned mostly to her extensive vocabulary in painting and drawing in the last years. Having exhibited and participated in group projects all over the world in New York, Los Angeles, Moscow, Berlin, Vienna, Seville, Madrid and Amsterdam, to mention only a few, painting and visual arts remain the artist's means of a very personal, intimate and poetic language.

Day 3
Lynne Zulu
Lynnie Zulu is a professional Illustrator born 1988 and bred in the Scottish Borders, with an artist mother who was born in Tanzania. Zulu’s work carries an African influence that is revealed in the energetic mark making and by the exotic characters she creates.
Her illustrations can be found in fashion print, apparel and accessories, LP artwork, live art and in exhibitions. She has always enjoyed working spontaneously because she wants her work to carry an energetic, lively quality. Lynne enjoys the whole process of watching an illustration unfold on the paper, which is why she prefers not to pre-plan it,” Lynnie’s style is a distinctive one, where a bold bright color palette is used to great effect in the playful charismatic characters she creates.“
The development of these characters is the driving force of her work; producing mysterious, seductive creatures and powerful femme fatales. Women are mostly the subject of her pieces which she brings to life using ink, paint and paint pens. By working spontaneously, the personalities evolve naturally into striking and engaging images which both shock and amuse, but always stimulate the eye.
Born and brought up in the wilds of the Scottish Borders into a creative family with strong African links which instilled a love of different cultures, and a fascination with people. Lynnie studied illustration at Kingston and now lives and works in East London, and has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in the UK, Europe and USA.

He is a multimedia artist and His works are influenced by his African yoruba background which is mostly decorative and colorful tend to neutralise dominating gray surroundings. There is emphasizes on head (Ori- Destiny). The size of the head is the artistic visual interpretation of what the future holds. In Yoruba culture and belief system, head is where authority and reasoning come from, therefore, your success in life depend on how you make good or bad use of your head. The head is considered bigger than the rest of the body because is essence of man. Therefore, the burden it bears makes it bigger. Our heads constituting our life-source and controlling personality and destiny. Three different modes of representing the head are identified in Yoruba aesthetics: the naturalistic, which refers to the external, or physical, head (orí òde); the stylized, which hints at the inner, or spiritual, head (orí inú); and the abstract, which symbolizes the primeval material (òkè ìpòrí) of which the inner head was made.
